As of March 29, 2005, FAA Regulations Parts 91, 121, 125, 129,135, ICAO Annex 6 Part 1 and JAR-OPS 1.665 require that all aircraft configured for six passengers or more must be equipped with an enhanced or forward-looking Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS). In order to comply with this mandate the existing basic Ground Proximity Warning Computer (GPWC) must be replaced with a GPWC that is equipped with a “forward looking terrain alerting” function. The Honeywell MK V or MK VII Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Computer (EGPWC) is an excellent replacement for air transport category aircraft equipped with an existing Allied Signal or Sundstrand GPWC. The EGPWC uses aircraft geological positioning, aircraft altitude and a terrain database to predict potential conflicts between the aircraft flight path and the terrain. This STC replaces the existing basic Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) with the Honeywell MK VII Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS). The EGPWC requires a GPS input. The customer should determine what type of GPS source will be utilized prior to ordering the EGPWC. Honeywell has two models that can be installed with this STC: one with an internal GPS receiver and one that requires an external GPS input via an ARINC 429 data bus.
When this STC was approved there was no requirement to display the terrain along the flight path of the aircraft. FAA Regulations now
require such a pictorial display of this terrain. Unless the aircraft is equipped with a compatible FMS display, the most logical place to
display the terrain is on the existing Weather Radar Indicator. Due to the age of the B727, one of several different weather radar systems
might be found in a given aircraft. Because of this, ASM has developed several different installation kits designed to interface with a
specific weather radar system. The Weather Radar Indicator must be capable of receiving ARINC 708/453 data in order to display the terrain
from the EGPWS computer. If the aircraft is equipped with a Primus 90 Weather Radar Indicator, ASM offers an STC (ST10279SC - ASM Kit #
K5644-0000-00) which installs an Avtech Display Switching Unit (DSU) that converts the ARINC 708/453 data to the Primus UDI format. If the
aircraft is equipped with a Weather Radar Indicator that is not capable of displaying the terrain, ASM offers an STC (ST10378SC – ASM
Kit # K5639-0000-00) which replaces the existing weather radar indicator with a Universal Avionics Systems Multi-Function Display.
