This modification replaces an existing Honeywell Mk II Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) Management Unit (MU) with a new Teledyne ACARS Communications Management Unit (CMU) in a McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Series aircraft.
System Description
The Teledyne ACARS CMU upgrade modification consists only of removing the existing ACARS MU and installing the Teledyne CMU in its place. The CMU replaces the existing MU in the E/E Bay on the AFT right radio rack shelf 1. The existing MU equipment tray and mating connector on the shelf will be used for the new CMU. All existing interfaces and wiring will remain and be used with the new ACARS CMU.
The purpose of the ACARS CMU is to provide a digital air-to-ground data communications link that enables onboard systems to transmit and receive data from the airline host computer on the ground. The crew interface with the ACARS is accomplished on a Multi-functional Control Display Unit (MCDU). A printer located in right console of the flight deck is connected to the CMU.

This modification includes two different existing configurations (A and B) and modifies each to a single, common ACARS configuration.
Configuration A airplanes will be modified by replacing the existing Rockwell Collins ACARS MU with a Teledyne Communications Management Unit (CMU). The existing ACARS control panel, a Rockwell Collins DFIDU, is modified with an FAA approved manufacturer service bulletin, and relocated from the aft center pedestal to the forward center pedestal. The existing Rockwell Collins 618M3 VHF Comm transceiver is replaced with a Rockwell Collins VHF-900 series transceiver. Power is supplied to each unit from existing circuit breakers. The ACARS Optional Auxiliary Terminal (OAT), which is installed on many of these configured airplanes, is removed with this modification.

The existing ACARS control panel, a Honeywell MIDU, is replaced by the Rockwell Collins DFIDU and relocated it from the aft center pedestal to the forward center pedestal. Power is supplied to each unit from existing circuit breaker.

The ACARS Optional Auxiliary Terminal (OAT) will be removed during this modification with the associated wiring capped and stowed.
